Ghost Wolves

The Ghost Wolves are a face melting, skull smashin' rock & roll duo based out of Austin, TX, featuring guitarist Carley Wolf and drummer Jonathan Wolf. They play a mash up of juke joint spook blues and 60's garage rock thrash, with a dash of old school rockabilly and glam. Their sound has best been described as a "blues/rock explosion.”

The duo started making music together in May 2010, as a side... project at first, but quickly became a full time venture. Both members have toured as members in many bands - Jonathan's drumming resume is long and winding, and includes work with legendary hardcore-punk guitarist Greg Ginn, country guit-steel virtuoso Junior Brown, fiddler and bandleader Warren Hood, east Austin blues-shack-rockers The Happen-Ins, and now defunct Americana group The Belleville Oufit, of which he was a founding member, recording and touring with them relentlessly between 2007-2011. Carley is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, trained first as a classical guitarist, later picking up mandolin, drums, upright bass, electric bass, piano, and slide guitar. She has performed internationally with The Crooked Jades, a west coast based string band, as well as on upright bass with rockabilly-sensation Johnny Falstaff. She has also fronted several incarnations of her own acoustic-band, The Howl, playing most of the instruments on their recordings.

So, how did two musicians this busy get their own band off the ground? On the off days, of course! The first year was spent writing and performing around Texas during downtime from other projects. The duo co-writes all of their material, drawing from many corners of the musical universe, with delta blues, rock & roll, and 60's garage thrash being at the top of the list. They've also found a great source of inspiration in the early-American field recordings of John and Alan Lomax, and on occasion perform their own arrangements of tunes from the massive collection of prison blues spirituals, mountain-folk recordings and cowboy songs.

In late 2010, the band was contacted by producer Stephen Ceresia, who after hearing their demos, invited them out to his home studio in Bastrop, TX to record a proper debut EP. Sensing the great opportunity that had presented itself, the duo decided to take a full month off from all of their other projects to prepare. They packed up and headed out to a lakehouse in the sparesly populated eastern Texas town of Normangee, with only their guitars, drums, and their 125 pound Gibler-dog, Winter, to accompany them. After practicing and writing 10-12 hours a day for a month straight, the duo returned to Austin with a sound that was increasingly raw and uninhibited. They hit the studio in April 2011 for three nights of tracking with Stephen, recording the EP almost entirely live, a conscious decision made to best capture the honest energy of their sound.

With their debut recording in hand, Carley and Jonny set out to tour the United State in the second half of 2011, with an itinerary that would bring them across the country twice before the year was out. Escaping the blinding summer heat of Austin, TX, they first headed north for a month long residency gig at the Lake Side Lounge on the lower east side of Manhattan. One of the stops on the road to New York included a collaboration in New Orleans with legendary drummer Johnny Vidacovich, which found them slamming out a fiery double drum set & slide guitar set with one of the cities most revered musicians, at one of the Crescent City's most famous venues, The Maple Leaf. The fall time brought them through the Midwest and out to the west coast for a string of shows in California, returning back to Austin just in time to join famed rocker Alejandro Escovedo for a night at the iconic Continental Club in mid November.

The duo is currently holed up in Austin, enjoying the cool weather and preparing for 3 more months of touring in the US starting in December. They are also very excited to announce the release of "In Ya Neck!" on Vinyl by local Austin label Pau Wau Records. The limited edition white 12-inch records will be available in early 2012.

"Live music is a great tradition, and if we can spend our time on this earth being a part of that, we are deeply thankful for that opportunity." Jonny explains. "We'll make our noise for a time, and then we'll be gone. And somebody else will be there to pick up where we left off."
